About Wool EMI

Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) is designed to reflect the general price movement for the greasy wool market and is a weighted average price across different wool types. The price is expressed in cents per clean kilogram.

  • The total wool produced in Australia is 324, 900 tonnes (greasy).
  • The gross value of Australian wool (includes value of dead wool and wool on skins) is $2.96 billion.(Source; Food, Fibre & Forestry Facts, NFF, 2017)
  • Australia is one of the world’s largest wool producers, producing around 25 per cent of greasy wool sold on the world market. (Source; Dept Agriculture website, 2019)
  • Wool is produced in all Australian states except the Northern Territory. New South Wales produces the greatest volume of wool, followed by Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia. In 2016-17, it is estimated that over 74.3 million sheep were shorn in Australia.(Source; Dept Ag, 2019)
